Sea Breams


General Information:
The Sea bream commonly called as Gilt-head (sea) bream in English and with scientific name Sparus aurata. In Arabi its popularly called as Dhinees. Its a fish of the bream family Sparidae found in the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern coastal regions of the North Atlantic Ocean The gilt-head bream is generally considered the best-tasting of the breams. Its genus Sparus – the Latin name for this which has given the whole family of Sparidae its name. The second part of the binomial name aurata, derives from the gold bar marking between its eyes. Gilthead seabream are very suitable species for aquaculture in the Mediterranean, due to their good market price, high survival rate and feeding .

Aquaculture History:
Hatchery production of Sea bream is first done in 1981-82 in Italy which paved the way for commercial large scale production of Sea bream fries in Greece,Spain and Italy during 1988-89. Due to Sea bream’s high adaptability to intensive and semi intensive rearing condition both in pond and cages, culture started all over these countries in extensive, semi intensive and intensive methods and now it is one of the popular fishe in Mediterrranean countries.

Production methods:
Gilthead seabream is farmed in coastal ponds, lagoons or in land-based installations and in sea cages following extensive, intensive and semi-intensive methods. The method of culture is classified according to their method of culture, stocking density, food supply and care taken.
